Rego card fetches nearly £7,000

You may recall that here I discussed a Paula Rego card that was to be auctioned at Sothebys.  Well the auction was yesterday and the card fetched a health £6875 including buyers commission.  This doesn't surprise me as it is a lovely example of her work.

Yes it is a lot of money but it has to be borne in mind that original works by Rego don't hit the secondary market that often. She isn't nearly as prolific as many other contemporary artists and this does mean the secondary market for her work is not as defined. Plus it is a lovely card. So in all I would say it was a good price for the seller but not unexpected. And I say that as neither the buyer, nor the seller of this piece.
